Have you ever had one of those times when you hear a piece of news and your eye actually twitches a little bit? Your blood pressure rises, your mind starts to race in an effort to understand what you just heard, and all the while, the eye is twitching. That happens to me more than is rational or what would be considered healthy. Usually it's about something inconsequential or only enraging to me personally because I'm sort of a psycho and get worked up over stupid shit all the time. This is not one of those times and if you don't agree with me you can go fuck yourself.
In case you haven't heard, the Olympics started on Friday. You know what I'm talking about right? The Olympics? Yeah, they have them every two years. It's a time for international harmony in the name of sport and friendly competition. It's a time when politics are set aside and financial status in the world can be ignored in the interest of everyone joining together to celebrate competition in a way that is pure. Of course I'm kidding. Money and politics have everything to do with the Olympics and the IOC is no stranger to corruption. But whatever. Anyone who is surprised that politics and corruption would play a part in the largest international events in the world is a naive douchebag.
So I don't get up in arms about stories that revolve around corruption scandals when it comes to international competition. It's just not worth it. And that's saying something, because I am willing to get up in arms about just about anything. What I will get pissed the fuck off about are stupid god damn rules and the arbitrary enforcement of them.
The goalie for the United States' ice hockey team, Jonathan Quick, has been ordered to remove the message "Support Our Troops" from his helmet. It is against IOC rules to have political propaganda displayed on uniforms in the Olympics. You know, that's OK. I agree that it's not appropriate to sport politically charged thoughts on your jersey or helmet, but guess what? "Support Our Troops" is not fucking political propaganda. It is a slogan used to remind those who may have forgotten that there are men and women who are currently putting themselves in harms way in order for us to be able to sit safely on our couches and watch fucking Olympic hockey. Propaganda is defined as information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc. "Support Our Troops" is not misinformation. It's not politically charged. It is not rumor or meant to help or harm anyone.
Quick didn't have "Hope" on his helmet. He didn't have "Blame Canada." He didn't have "The French are frog eating pussies who contribute dick all to the world." He had a show of support for the bravest citizens of our country. Fuck you IOC. Fuck you International Ice Hocky Federation. And for good measure, fuck you too Canada. Seriously, so far your Olympics have sucked. Hard.
